I waited for several minutes and watched as the dots popped up on the bottom of my screen. They popped up, disappeared, popped up again, disappeared, and after they disappeared for the fourth time, I was feeling a little frustrated. She was on the cusp of telling me what she wanted to say, but something was holding her back. If she could open up to me, I might be able to help—or at least talk through it with her. I just didn’t want to be too pushy. That was what Jonah did to me, and it never helped. The dots finally disappeared for the last time and a quick message popped up wishing me goodnight. It seemed that whatever her secret was, she couldn’t find the courage to share it, even at the bottom of a bottle. I finished the bourbon left in my glass and headed to my bedroom as well. I stared at the ceiling for a few minutes, wondering what could be so bad that she didn’t want to talk about. My head went to some dark places, but I pushed those thoughts away. If she wanted to talk about it, she would.
